Grimdark Soulslike · D&D 5e

A dying world ruled by vampiric Dragonlords. You are a Hunter, one of the few who walks toward the dark on purpose. This is grimdark, Souls-like Dungeons & Dragons 5e, run as a persistent Play-by-Post world where the dice fall where they fall and the monsters remember how you fight.

The World

Nidhogg was once a realm of warm sunlight and divine protection. Then the dragons turned on the gods, consumed their essence, and rose again as Dragonlords, vampiric abominations whose scales drink light instead of reflecting it. The gods' corpses still litter the continent of Duat: a rib cage the size of a cathedral, a skull a village now lives inside. Overhead, the Blood Star burns crimson and watches. Stand in its light too long and you feel something vast turn its attention your way.

Nine centuries into the Age of Endless Dread, humanity clings to its last great city, Haima. The walls are thick, the prayers constant, and every morning the census takers note who didn't survive the night.

What You Play

You are not the chosen one. No prophecy speaks your name; the gods who might have picked you are dead. You are simply someone who decided not to die today, a Hunter, humanity's final defense against the things in the dark. Hope is a luxury, everything has a cost, and the only real light in this endless night is the stubborn refusal to stop being human.

How It Plays

Bloodscale runs on Dungeons & Dragons 5e, tuned for high-lethality, Souls-like tension: bonfire-style checkpoints, enemies that adapt to your tactics, and consequences that stick. As a persistent Play-by-Post world it never pauses, seasonal arcs (The Pale March, The Bloomtide, The Crimson Solstice, and beyond) move forward whether you log in or not, and a custom Discord bot stack tracks your inventory, dice, and wounds. Show up, write, survive.

Quick Questions

Q: Do I need to know D&D 5e already?
A: No. New and rusty players are welcome, the guided orientation teaches the basics and the free 5e builder walks you through making a Hunter.
Q: How lethal is it, really?
A: Lethal. Dice aren't fudged and punches aren't pulled, but the table is a safe space for players even when it's a dangerous place for characters. Death has weight here; so does survival.
Q: What's "persistent Play-by-Post" mean?
A: You play by writing posts on Discord on your own schedule, in a shared world that keeps moving. Seasonal storylines, world bosses, and NPCs that remember you. More on how Play-by-Post works →
